Unique (& Cheap) Things to Do in New Orleans
If you’re in New Orleans for a few days and want to skip all the Bourbon Street shenanigans, try these unique New Orleans activities out for size. They won’t break the bank.
Ferry to Algiers Point
If you’re looking for a nice way to spend a calm and quiet afternoon, head on over to the Canal Street Ferry terminal. From there you can take a 5 minute ferry ride to Algiers point.
Algiers Point doesn’t have a ton to do—but a nice stroll through the quiet & idyllic streets will reveal a few quaint cafes and bars. Our favorite was the Crown and Anchor English Pub—full of charming locals and sporting a ton of Dr Who references that really tickled me.
Cost: $2 for the ferry
Cemetery Tour
Free Tours by Foot will give you a free* tour of the St Louise Cemetery #1. It last around 1.5 hours. The tour guides basically work off of tips alone—which means they are always knowledgeable and engaging.
Psst. You’ll see Nicholas Cage’s tomb (which he obviously isn’t in yet)!
Cost: $2 booking fee, plus a tip
Carousel Bar
There is a bar in the Hotel Monteleone with seats around the edges that slowly spin around the center. An entire rotation takes 15 minutes, but you may have to wait 10 minutes or so to score a seat.
Beware! If you are prone to sea sickness (I am), this bar might make you feel a bit ill. I had to order a fizzy drink just to settle my stomach.
Cost: One drink ($12-15)
Frenchman Street
You’ve probably heard this one before, but be sure to check out the live jazz happening down on Frenchman Street. Often there are bands performing in the street, and you can pop your head into any one of the many music bars to see what is on offer.
I also came across a handmade street festival when I went there, which I’m sure isn’t an uncommon occurance.
Cost: Free (+ tips for the bands)
