Wine Tasting In Western Australia
A Treat For Your Taste Buds.
Margaret River
The Napa Of Western Australia
Drive a few hours south of Perth and you will discover a rapidly growing wine town named Margaret River. The area is heavily influenced by a maritime climate which means great white wines. I tried some delicious chardonnay’s while exploring the area.
Margaret River gets the grapes for their heavier reds from further inland allowing them to pour some truly yummy Cabs and Merlots. You will not be disappointed with the wines in this region.
Wineries To Try
Margaret river is home to over 150 wineries, so I wasn’t able to try them all. Here are a few of the best I found.
Stella Bella Wines– A small but beautiful wine tasting. What this tasting room lacks in size, it makes up for in delicious wines.
Woody Nook Wines– Yummy wines and a restaurant with food as well. Get a snack while you taste and relax.
Cape Mentelle Wines– One of my favorite tasting experiences of the Margaret River. (They also have out door movies occasionally!)
Denmark/Mt Barker
The Sonoma Of Western Australia
While I enjoyed Margaret River a lot, I truly fell in love with the Denmark/Mt Barker area. Mt Barker is about 2-3 hours further away from Perth than Margaret River. That being said, if you have the time then I think the distance is worth it.
More often than not, the person pouring your wines in Mt Barker is the same person whose name is on the bottle. These small wineries make for much more intimate and enjoyable experiences when wine tasting. The best part is their wines are delicious. I came away from Mt Barker with far too many wine bottles.
Wineries To Try
Denmark and Mt Barker are about 1 hour away from each other, but it is well worth visiting both of them. Here are a few of my favorite wineries in each location.
Plantagenet Winery– I tried my favorite Shiraz in all of Western Australia at this winery. (Come at lunch time and get pizza and a glass of wine for only $20.)
Alkoomi Winery– Some of the best red wines in the region! Make sure to visit their wine room in Albany!
The Lake House Winery– Wines were good, but the beautiful location is the real selling point. Enjoy a delicious meal and wine with a breathtaking view.
Too Much Wine, Too Little Time
As I mentioned Earlier, Western Australia has more wineries than you could visit in a year. I absolutely recommend exploring this part of Australia and trying out their delicious wines.
