SOL Organic Sheets Review | Ethically Soft Sheets

SOL Organic Sheets Review

SOL organic sheets consider themselves to be “ethically soft sheets” and the company offers a “fair price model” so that everyone can enjoy luxury sheets without paying luxury prices. The company tested high-end sheets from competitors to determine the best formula for success when it comes to producing and selling a quality sheet to consumers. I reviewed the SOL Organics Sheets to see for myself just how “luxury” these sheets were.

Make and Model of Materials

In considering the materials used for these organic sheets, I looked at the thread count and the yarn count. The sheets I reviewed were 300 thread count and 60s yarn count. This combination of thread and yarn count, according to the company, offers lasting quality and comfort for customers.

The sheets are organic using 100% long staple organic cotton. There’s no real way to test for that in a home test, so we’ll just take the company’s word for it. You can feel the sateen finish on the sheets, which the company says will provide breathability, and a cooling effect while sleeping.

Like most sheet sets, the Queen size sheet set comes with 1 fitted sheet, 1 flat sheet, and 2 pillowcases. Upon inspection, the sheet set looks like any other sheet set you would buy: complete with elastic band on the fitted sheet to prevent it from slipping off the bed. The pillow cases appear standard as well.

The Sheets

Overall Look and Style

It’s not hard to see why these sheets are labeled as luxury. They look and feel like much more expensive sheets, and with less thread count, SOL has made a beautiful product. The sheets are comfortable to sleep in and provide a soft touch to your skin. The sateen feeling of the sheets meant that my body didn’t get caught up in hot spots while I slept, and the sheets didn’t slip off the mattress while I slept. This has happened to me on more than one occasion with lesser quality sheets because they don’t allow your body to move easily.

The sheets I tested had a hem style, but SOL offers three styles in three different colors. Plain, pleated and hemmed sheets are available in white, cream and blue colors.

My partner enjoyed the sheets because they were easy on the eyes and didn’t have a lot of wild colors – like some other sheets we own. I appreciated the modern look and feel of the sheets and found that they went well with my existing bedding because they are neutral in color.

Quality

While the SOL sheet set looks like your average sheet set from a distance, the closer you get to the material, the quality becomes apparent. I inspected the stitching of the sheets and pillowcases and found there were no “flyaway” threads, which are very common on sheet sets. This is indicative of attention to detail by SOL. What’s more, the material felt good against my skin and I could tell that it would provide me with a cooling effect as I touched it. It was soft and smooth.

In examining the pillowcases, I found the quality of care was the same as the sheets themselves: there were no flyaway threads and the material was well constructed and seemed durable under my touch.

Durability and Performance

In order to test the durability of the SOL organic sheet set, I dressed the mattress with the product. The sheets fit well around my mattress; I’ve used sheet sets in the past that were quite difficult to fit a queen size mattress, even though they were queen size sheets. The SOL sheet set went on the mattress without a struggle. Laying in the sheets, they felt really comfortable and soft. I didn’t find the sheets to be overly cooling, but they weren’t making me feel warm either. So I would say they were just the right condition for sleeping. The sateen finish on the sheets felt nice as well, and I was reminded of the quality of the sheets when I slept in them.

Upon waking, I noticed the sheets were not overly wrinkled. Less expensive sheets often wrinkle quickly and look worn after just one night, but the SOL sheets looked good as new after sleeping in them for one night. I don’t expect that they would hold up to that expectation over time, but it was a testament to the construction of the materials that it didn’t wrinkle on the first use.

Wash Test and Damage

I love new sheets. I often purchase new sheets because they are an easy way to spruce up your home and make it feel fresh and new. However, once my new sheets get washed in the washing machine, they start to take on a “fuzz” that makes them appear old and worn after just one wash. They are never the same again. Of course, many manufacturers recommend washing your sheets before using them anyway, so you might never know how they were supposed to fit and feel on your bed in the first place.

SOL organic sheets are built with exceptional materials and I was not expecting to see a major change in the composition and size of the sheets once I washed them. I took measurements in order to gauge just how much these sheets would stand up to the washing machine and dryer. Washing them in cold water and drying them on low heat resulted in a slight decrease in size, but the feel of the sheets remained the same. In other words, they didn’t get “fuzzy” the way other sheets do once they have been washed. If I had to guess, I would say it’s because of the high-quality design and construction of the sheets. Even though the sheets did shrink slightly, they were no more difficult to place back on the bed than they were when I first opened them.

In order to determine the accuracy of this wash test, I rewashed and dried the sheets several times. They stood up well to the washing and dryer and still had the sateen feeling that was cooling on the skin; as well, they continued to fit the mattress as expected. What’s more, there were no loose threads after several continued washes, which was a nice surprise.

Color and Fading

I worried about washing the sheets with other sheets or household materials because of the possibility of color transfer. Once the sheets were washed once and dried, I performed a color transfer test to see how much “loose” dye was in the organic sheets. I soaked one of the pillowcases and laid it on a paper towel for a few moments. I pressed on the pillowcase to try to transfer some of the dye from the pillowcase to the paper towel. When I lifted the pillowcase, there was no dye transferred.

If this doesn’t seem like a good quality color test, do this with a new pair of jeans and see how fast your hands and the paper towel become covered in dye from the denim.

Furthermore, because I had washed the sheets several times, I kept the fabric bag the sheets came in as a reference point for fading. I was pleased to see the sheets did not fade over several washes. Even though the color was light, to begin with, it was clear that the material retained its intended color. And clearly, because the pillowcase passed the color test, fading wouldn’t be expected in subsequent washes.

SOL Organic Sheets Review Summary

Rating 9.5

First, it is difficult to get an inexpensive set of sheets for less than $100 that doesn’t make your skin crawl from rough materials and poor construction. Second, it is difficult to find a set of sheets that are made well even if they cost more than $100. SOL has seemed to break the barrier between price and luxury with these organic sheets. They provide an overall nice feeling on the skin, they are modern and fit into most bedding coordinates, they don’t wrinkle a great deal, shrink much, or transfer color from one material to another.

Overall, I would say that for the price and quality of these sheets, SOL has done a good job of providing the customer with an affordable luxury item.
