The Verdict

A Bold, Affordable Way to Refresh Your Makeup Bag

Deck of Scarlet teams up with a different trendsetting YouTuber every two months to build a limited-edition makeup palette, and this round's collaborator, Evon Wahab, leaned into sunny brights, power browns and charred greens. At $29.95 a box, it's a bold pitch for anyone bored with their routine.

Our first box arrived in pretty packaging that had us oohing before we even opened it — and the orange Sunshine face pigment and Corral Kisses lip color inside confirmed this is not makeup for the faint of heart. The heavy-duty cardboard palette held eyeshadows in Fudge and a forest-green Mermaid, a glittery Halo highlighter, Sandstorm cheek color, Almond lip color, plus a Chameleon eyeliner and Cake Pop lip liner.

A handwritten note from Team Scarlet and an introduction to Evon Wahab as this month's Artist-in-Chief made the box feel personal, though we did notice one gap: there were no written instructions for what each tile was for or how to use it, sending us to the website to figure it out.

What tips the scale is the math: Deck of Scarlet values its full-size palettes at $150, and this one runs $29.95. Skip a box you don't like, or request an easy replacement — you're only billed for what you keep.

The radical Sunshine pigment first reminded us of clowns, but it blended in nicer than expected, and we don't leave home without the Chameleon eyeliner now. It's a fun, affordable way to try looks we wouldn't otherwise reach for, made easier by having a popular YouTuber walk us through it.

Pros

Why We Love It

  • Well-coordinated colors that create multiple looks
  • Every palette is unique
  • Full-size palettes are valued at $150, yet the box is $29.95
  • Online tutorials from a popular YouTuber
  • Cruelty-free
  • Paraben-free
  • Made in the United States
Cons

Considerations

  • The cardboard palette won't hold up to heavy long-term use
  • Only a thin sheet of plastic protects the colors from smearing the mirror or box
  • Some color choices may be too bold for cautious users
  • No brushes included for application
  • Requires web access for tutorials and product descriptions

Unboxing the Evon Wahab Palette

Inside our black box we found an orange Sunshine face pigment and Corral Kisses lip color — a clear signal this palette skews bold rather than neutral. The heavy-duty cardboard compact, complete with a built-in mirror, packed in eight coordinated products: Fudge and Mermaid eyeshadows, Halo highlighter, Sandstorm cheek color, Almond lip color, Chameleon eyeliner and Cake Pop lip liner.

The paper extras — a handwritten note, an introduction to Artist-in-Chief Evon Wahab, and a welcome card — did a good job introducing the brand, but we had to visit Deck of Scarlet's website to learn what each tile was for, since the box itself didn't include instructions.

Not for the Faint of Heart

The Sunshine pigment read as clown-bright straight out of the box, but blended into our look far more naturally than we expected once applied.

We Recommend This To Readers Who:

  • Look for different ways to enhance their look

Coordinated colors and online tutorials make it easy to design new looks, from Coral Kisses for more drama to Almond lip color to tone it down.

  • Want affordable makeup

A lip liner and eyeliner alone could cost as much as one box, and a full-size version of this palette is valued at $150.

  • Don't know how to shop for cosmetics

The subscription distills overwhelming in-store choices into one coordinated palette built for looks from casual to date night to avant garde.

  • Want to keep up with trends

Deck of Scarlet combs the internet for the hottest looks and designs a palette to help you recreate them.
