We went into the Scum and Villainy Cantina hoping for an immersive Star Wars experience, but a Hollywood Blvd. location should have been the first hint that this was, at its core, just a bar.
After paying $50 and waiting 30 minutes in line, the room itself delivered: smoke machines, laser lights, a soundtrack close to the Mos Eisley Cantina's, and a crowd of guests in genuinely impressive costumes. That's largely where the positives stopped.
The room was small and packed well past comfortable capacity, with no realistic chance of finding a seat unless you'd waited an hour to be first in line. Drinks were expensive, oddly named after Star Trek and other franchises rather than Star Wars, and — by our account — too sugary and not very good.
The bigger issue was the missing entertainment. Mos Eisley's draw was its alien creatures, and we expected at least a character or two to sell the space-bar illusion; none appeared over the course of the night, and the crowd had thinned out by 11pm.
We put too much stock in the immersive premise, and the venue leaned on that premise a little too hard itself. Better drinks and a few hired alien actors would go a long way — we'd have gladly paid more for a more authentic night.
