On $1,500 rent, Split Pay charges $32.49 to cover up to $750 of it for two weeks.
TopDown ReviewsTwo weeks of breathing room on your biggest bill, for a fee
Split Pay is an app and website that pays one big monthly bill for you on its due date: rent, a mortgage, a car payment or a student loan. You pay part of it that day and the rest to Split Pay 14 days later. It's run by Visible Ideas, Inc., a financial technology company rather than a bank, with banking handled by Evolve Bank & Trust. Landlords who get paid through it may see the company's older name, rent.app.
Once you're approved you get your own account and routing numbers. If you pay rent through a portal like RentCafe, Yardi or AppFolio, you add those numbers as a bank account and schedule the full rent as usual. Split Pay pays it when the portal pulls the money, and your landlord sees one ordinary, on-time payment. If you pay your landlord directly, Split Pay sends the rent instead, and your landlord accepts it once and connects a bank account to receive it.
The fee is $9.99 plus 1.5% of the whole bill, added to your first payment. On $1,500 rent that's $32.49. Split Pay covers between 30% and 50% of the bill, depending on your approval, so at most it's fronting $750 for two weeks, and the fee comes to about 4.3% of that money. If it covers 30%, it's fronting $450 for the same $32.49, about 7.2%. There's no interest, and Split Pay doesn't charge a late fee on the second payment.
Split Pay's own pages describe the $9.99 in two ways. The help center calls it a flat fee per bill you split. The App Store listing says $9.99 a month, and the terms, updated October 9, 2026, allow for a monthly membership fee charged whether or not you split a bill that month. Split Pay says the exact fee appears on your approval screen before you commit.
Split Pay is rated 4.9 on the App Store from about 20,000 ratings and 4.8 on Google Play from about 4,300 reviews. The recent picture is rougher. About a quarter of the 100 most recent App Store reviews give one or two stars, and the same complaints keep coming back: applications denied with no reason given, payments sent directly to landlords arriving days after rent was due, and support that starts with an AI chat. The praise is about the thing it's built for: no late fees, and, for people paying through a portal, a landlord who sees nothing unusual.
Why We Love It
- No credit check, soft or hard, and no credit score requirement
- No interest, and no late fee on your second payment
- Through a rent portal, your landlord sees one full, on-time payment
- You can delay your second payment by up to 4 business days yourself
- Free, opt-in reporting of on-time rent to two credit bureaus, and late payments are never reported
- Works for mortgages, car payments and student loans as well as rent
Considerations
- Costs $9.99 plus 1.5% of the bill each time you split
- Split Pay may cover only 30% of the bill at first, and the fee doesn't shrink
- Direct payments to a landlord take 3 to 5 business days to arrive
- Approval depends on your bank history, and denials come without a detailed reason
- One bill at a time, and switching bills means applying again
- Needs a Visa or Mastercard debit card. Discover, Privacy.com and savings accounts don't work
How Split Pay Works in Practice
Applying takes a few minutes. You connect your checking account through Plaid, verify your identity with your Social Security number, and add a Visa or Mastercard debit card. Split Pay decides from your deposits, balances and payment history, with no income threshold, and tells you right away how much of the bill it will cover. If you're denied, you get one immediate retry with a bank account you haven't connected before, or you can apply again after 30 days.
Timing is where it goes wrong for people. Through a rent portal, the full rent is paid when the portal pulls it, usually on the due date. Paid directly to a landlord, Split Pay's help center says the money arrives 3 to 5 business days after it goes out, so a payment sent on the 1st can land on the 6th or 7th. Bank transfers also don't move on weekends or federal holidays.
Your second payment comes out 14 days after the first, automatically, from your debit card or checking account. Every reminder Split Pay sends has a link that lets you delay it by up to 4 business days. Your account will show the payment as past due during that time, and Split Pay's terms let it take whatever is in your account if there isn't enough to cover the full amount.
An approval doesn't last forever. You have 60 days after accepting to make your first split, and each successful split keeps you eligible for another 60. If a window passes, the account goes inactive and you apply again from scratch.
Paying your landlord directly? Send it early
Schedule a direct payment at least a week before rent is due, and keep enough in your account until Split Pay confirms it went through. Recent reviews describe late fees from payments sent on the due date.
We Recommend This To Readers Who:
-
Pay rent through a portal that accepts bank payments
The money arrives when the portal pulls it, with no wait for a landlord to accept.
-
Get paid every two weeks
The second payment lands 14 days after the first, which can line up with your next paycheck.
-
Face a late fee bigger than the Split Pay fee
If your lease charges more than $32.49 for late rent on $1,500, splitting costs less than paying late.
What happens to one rent payment
The order of events when you split $1,500 rent, assuming Split Pay covers half.
Due date
Your portal pulls $1,500 from your Split Pay numbers. Your landlord gets the full rent.
Same day
Split Pay charges you your $750 share plus the $32.49 fee.
If you need longer
A link in any reminder delays that second payment by up to 4 business days.
What Split Pay costs
Split Pay's help center lists the fee as $9.99 plus 1.5% of the bill each time you split, added to your first payment. These are its own examples. If your account carries the $9.99 as a monthly membership instead, a month you don't split still costs $9.99.
| Option | Price |
|---|---|
| $400 student loan | $15.99 |
| $450 car payment | $16.74 |
| $1,500 rent | $32.49 |
| $2,400 mortgage | $45.99 |

Split Pay questions, answered
What people ask before signing up, answered from Split Pay's own help center and terms.
Is Split Pay legit?
Yes. It's run by Visible Ideas, Inc., with banking through Evolve Bank & Trust, Member FDIC. It's rated 4.9 on the App Store from about 20,000 ratings, though about a quarter of the 100 most recent reviews give one or two stars.
Is Split Pay a loan?
Split Pay says no. It calls itself a payment service, charges no interest and doesn't check your credit. It does pay part of your bill before you do and charges a fee for that, so the fee is what to weigh.
How does Split Pay compare with Flex?
Flex, the best-known rival, charges up to $5.99 a month, 0.5% of the bill and up to 3% of the amount it covers. On $1,500 rent split in half, that's up to $35.99 against Split Pay's $32.49. If only $450 is covered, Flex comes to $26.99 and Split Pay stays at $32.49. Flex also splits utilities and phone bills, and may run a soft credit check.
Will my landlord know I use Split Pay?
Not if you pay through a portal. Your landlord sees one full payment from a bank account. If you pay your landlord directly, they get a notice from Split Pay and have to accept the payment and connect a bank account, a one-time step.
Why was I denied?
Split Pay decides from your bank activity, such as how regular your deposits are, your balances and your payment history, not your credit score or income. It doesn't publish a cutoff. You can retry once right away with a different bank account, or apply again after 30 days.
Is there a Split Pay referral code?
No, it works through a member's referral link. Signing up through one gets a new customer a $50 Tremendous gift card, a virtual Visa, once their first payment settles. Split Pay calls it a free month, and $50 covers the fee on any bill up to about $2,667. We explain how it works at couponsuck.com/split-pay-referral-code/.
Should you use Split Pay?
If you pay rent through a portal and being late would cost you more than the fee, it does what it says: your landlord gets paid on time and you get two more weeks to cover part of it. Before you commit, check your approval screen for how much Split Pay will cover and whether the $9.99 is charged per split or every month.
