Blackbird App Review 2026: 3% Back Until You Spend $500
Blackbird is a free app for paying at partner restaurants and coffee shops from your phone, and every dollar you pay earns points worth 3% to 7% back toward later Blackbird meals.
A new Blackbird account earns 3% back in Fly, which only spends at Blackbird restaurants. Spending $500 there in a calendar year raises it to 4%.
TopDown ReviewsPoints for paying at restaurants, in nine places
Blackbird wants to make paying for dinner a little more rewarding. The free app lets you settle your bill at participating restaurants and earn points toward your next meal. It sounds simple enough, and at restaurants you already frequent, it can be a nice perk.
When you arrive, you tap your phone on a small Blackbird puck near the host stand or register. That tells the restaurant who you are, whether you're a regular and whether it's your birthday. When you're ready to go, you close the check in the app instead of waiting for the card machine to come back. If your friends have Blackbird too, they can tap in at the same table and split the bill without anyone doing the math.
The catch is that Blackbird adds another step to paying for dinner, and the rewards aren't especially generous until you've spent quite a bit. New members earn 3% back, rising to 4% after spending $500 in a calendar year. A $100 dinner earns just $3 to start, and those rewards can only be spent at another Blackbird restaurant.
The rate keeps climbing if you eat out a lot. Spending $5,000 in a year moves you to 5%, and $10,000 to 7%, along with priority reservations and members-only nights. $5,000 is about fifty $100 dinners, so for most people Blackbird will be a 3% or 4% app. Coffee is the exception. Participating coffee shops pay 10% back on any tier, more than even the top tier earns on dinner.
Where you live matters too. Blackbird is only in nine places right now: New York City, the Hamptons, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Charleston, and the Colorado ski towns of Aspen, Vail and Breckenridge. The points travel with you, though, so Fly earned in New York spends the same way in Denver. If your city also has inKind, it's worth a look. It pays up to 20% back at more than 10,000 restaurants, but its credit expires at the end of the second month after your last visit, while Blackbird's never does.
There's also a disconnect between the app's reputation and its recent feedback. Blackbird has an impressive 4.8-star App Store rating, but more than half of the 100 most recent reviews we examined gave it just one or two stars. Complaints range from confusing checkout procedures to incorrect charges and accounts being suspended.
Some of that frustration is new. Reviewers say Blackbird used to give out small amounts of points just for checking in at nearby restaurants, and stopped this fall. Others mention a hold of about $100 on their card while a check is open. It isn't a charge, but on a debit card that money is tied up until the bank lets it go.
Still, there's real value here. Blackbird is free, its points never expire, and you can earn credit card rewards on top of what the app pays back. The question is whether those benefits outweigh the extra effort, particularly if only a handful of your favorite restaurants participate.

Considerations
- Fly only spends at Blackbird restaurants and can't be cashed out
- Live in only nine places, mostly big cities and ski towns
- Paying at the table can take several steps, and staff aren't always sure how it works
- Users report a hold of about $100 on their card while a check is open
- No refunds on money you load into your Blackbird wallet
- Users say rewards for checking in without paying were cut in 2026
How Blackbird Works at the Table
Once you've tapped in, tell your server you're paying with Blackbird, and close the check in the app when you're done. Fly usually lands once the check closes, though Blackbird says payments can take up to 24 hours.
You can pay with a linked card, with Fly, or with money you've loaded into your Blackbird wallet. Paying with Fly doesn't earn more Fly. Blackbird says the visit still counts toward your next tier, but doesn't say whether the amount paid in Fly counts toward the spending total. Loading money is also a shortcut to a tier: $250 in a single load makes you a Member at once, $2,500 a Regular, and $5,000 Friends & Family. Blackbird's FAQ says it gives no refunds, so loaded money is only worth what you'll spend at Blackbird restaurants.
The card hold comes from Blackbird's terms, which let it hold the estimated bill, tip included, or a set amount to open a check. Blackbird doesn't say how long the hold lasts, and your bank decides when to release it. The terms also allow one account per person, and tapping in without eating is against the rules.
Loading $250 gets you 4% sooner, with no refunds
A single $250 load makes you a Member at once, so you earn 4% from your next bill instead of after your first $500. Blackbird gives no refunds, and the money only spends at its restaurants, so it only makes sense if you're sure you'll spend at least $250 there.
We Recommend This To Readers Who:
-
Eat out in one of its nine places
Open the Explore tab first. The points are only worth something if your usual places take it.
-
Spend $500 or more a year at Blackbird restaurants
That's when the rate goes from 3% to 4% and the Club perks start.
-
Don't mind a few extra steps at checkout
Paying in the app takes longer than handing over a card, especially where staff are new to it.
Blackbird Club tiers
Your tier sets how much Fly each dollar earns. Each one is reached by spending in a calendar year or by loading money in one go.
No tier yet
Every new account. 3 Fly per dollar paid, which is 3% back.
Regular
$5,000 spent or $2,500 loaded. 5% back, priority reservations, Members' Nights.
Coffee Club
10% back at participating coffee shops on any tier. It replaces your rate, it doesn't add.

Blackbird questions, answered
What people ask before downloading, answered from Blackbird's own FAQ and terms.
Is Blackbird legit?
Yes. Blackbird is run by Blackbird Labs, Inc. and publishes its terms and FAQ. Its App Store rating is 4.8 overall, but most recent reviews give one or two stars, mainly over payments that stall at the table, wrong or double charges, and accounts suspended until the owner sends ID. Those are service problems rather than signs of a scam.
Do I need crypto to use Blackbird?
No. Blackbird keeps Fly on a blockchain, but you never buy, hold or trade crypto yourself, and Blackbird pays any network fees. Right now Fly can only be spent at Blackbird restaurants, and you can't move it to an outside wallet.
How does Blackbird compare with inKind?
inKind pays up to 20% back depending on the restaurant and covers more than 10,000 venues, but its credit expires at the end of the second month after your last visit. Blackbird pays 3% to 7% in nine places, and its Fly never expires. If your usual spots take inKind, it usually pays more; if you eat out now and then, Blackbird's Fly is easier to keep.
Is there a Blackbird referral code?
Yes. New members get 2,000 Fly, worth $20, after their first meal paid through Blackbird when they join with a member's code. Ours is bb-r41zg4, and the button at the top of this page opens its invite. We keep the current code and the steps at couponsuck.com/blackbird-referral-code/.
What if my Fly doesn't show up?
Blackbird says Fly usually lands after the check closes, and payments can take up to 24 hours. If it still hasn't arrived, email support@blackbird.xyz within 30 days. Blackbird's terms say you lose the claim after that.
Should you download Blackbird?
Only if restaurants you already go to take it. Then you get 3% back in Fly from the first bill, 4% once you've spent $500 in a year, and $20 from a referral, on top of your card's own rewards. Expect a few extra steps when you pay, and don't load more money than you'll spend there.
