inKind Review 2026: Rewards You Spend at inKind Restaurants
inKind is a free app for paying restaurant bills from your phone, and it pays you back up to 20% of each bill as credit for your next inKind meal.
At a restaurant paying the full 20%, a $65.40 dinner check earns up to $13.08 toward your next inKind meal.
TopDown ReviewsA rewards program you pay into at the table
inKind is a free app for paying your restaurant check from your phone. At a participating restaurant, bar or café, you open the app, find your table's check, add a tip and pay with a card you've linked. The restaurant then gives you back a share of what you paid, up to 20%, as inKind Cash Back. You spend that at any inKind venue on a later visit. inKind lists more than 10,000 of them across the US, from coffee shops to tasting menus, and says it has paid out $230 million in rewards.
inKind's own pitch to restaurants describes its diners as "carrying credit they can only spend at partner restaurants like yours." That's what the reward is. You can't withdraw it, pass it to a friend, or spend it outside the network. It only buys another inKind meal.
Two rules decide how much you actually get back. First, Cash Back is earned only on what's charged to your card, never on the tip, and never on any part of the bill you paid with a discount or an existing balance. Second, it runs on a clock: it expires at the end of the second calendar month after your most recent inKind visit, so money earned on January 10 lasts until March 31 unless you eat at an inKind restaurant again first. Each visit resets the clock for your whole balance.
On the numbers, a $60 dinner for two with 9% tax comes to $65.40 before tip. At a restaurant paying the full 20%, you'd get up to $13.08 back for next time. Rates vary by restaurant, and the app shows each one's rate before you pay. If you already eat out a couple of times a month in a city where your usual spots take inKind, that adds up quickly. If the nearest participating restaurant is a drive away, the balance will likely expire before you use it.
The app is rated 4.9 on the App Store across more than 100,000 ratings. Reviews away from the App Store are lower, and they keep coming back to the same few problems. On Trustpilot, where inKind doesn't invite reviews, it scores 2.7 from 43, and the Better Business Bureau lists 30 complaints. The recurring problems are offers that didn't apply at checkout, what look like double charges but are usually a bank's temporary hold, refunds on orders a restaurant couldn't fill, and emails to support going unanswered.
Why We Love It
- Free to download and use, with no subscription needed to earn Cash Back
- Up to 20% back on each bill, with the rate for each restaurant shown before you pay
- New members get $25 off a first meal of $50 or more before tax and tip
- More than 10,000 participating restaurants, bars and cafés across the US
- Your card is still charged, so a dining rewards card earns its own points on top
- Prepaid inKind Cash never expires on the part you paid for
Considerations
- Rewards are inKind credit, not cash, and only spendable at inKind restaurants
- Cash Back expires at the end of the second month after your last inKind visit
- Nothing is earned on the tip or on any part of a bill paid with a discount or balance
- Coverage is strongest in big cities and can be thin or absent in smaller towns
- Users report offers failing to apply and slow replies from support by email
- Paying relies on your phone having signal at the table
How inKind Works in Practice
You pay through the app rather than handing over a card. Many partner restaurants connect inKind to their point-of-sale system, so your check appears in the app and you close it yourself. The food, drinks and tax are charged to your linked card as one payment, and the tip plus any service or delivery fees go on the same card as a second charge. Your bank may show two lines for one meal, and that's how it's meant to work.
Offers have to be applied before you pay. inKind can't add a discount to a check that's already closed, and it can't refund a charge the restaurant ran on its own card terminal. Only one offer works per check, even if you split the bill. If you see two charges from the same meal, the second is usually a temporary hold from your bank that drops off within three to seven business days.
inKind also sells prepaid credit, called inKind Cash, at a bonus. The part you paid for never expires, and the bonus part lasts three years. There's also a paid membership, inKind Pass. Its older marketing promised a flat 20% back plus a monthly $50 off a bill of $150 or more. The current terms describe Pass rewards in the same words as the free app, up to 20% back, and some App Store reviewers say the monthly bonuses have changed. Check what Pass includes in the app before you pay for it.
The $50 minimum is before tax
The new-member $25 applies to a check of $50 or more before tax and tip. A $46 meal that reaches $50.14 with tax doesn't qualify. You also have to open the invite link before creating your account. inKind can't attach the reward afterward.
We Recommend This To Readers Who:
-
Already eat out a couple of times a month
Each visit earns credit and resets the expiry clock on your whole balance, so regular diners rarely lose any.
-
Live in a city where their usual spots take inKind
The rewards are only worth as much as the restaurants nearby, so check the map in the app first.
-
Want to stack rewards on a dining card
inKind charges your own card, so a card that earns extra on restaurants still earns on the part you pay.
Where your money goes on an inKind check
One restaurant bill paid through inKind splits into several parts, and each follows its own rule.
Food, drinks and tax
Charged to your linked card through the app. The only part that earns Cash Back.
Offers and balances
One per check, applied before paying. The part they cover earns no Cash Back.
Prepaid inKind Cash
Bought at a bonus. The paid part never expires; the bonus part lasts three years.
What a $60 dinner for two costs with inKind
A $60 dinner for two, 9% sales tax, and a 20% tip on the food. The tip is always charged separately.

Good to Know
inKind questions, answered
What people ask before downloading, answered from inKind's own terms and help center.
Is inKind legit?
Yes. inKind is a real payments and rewards company based in Austin, Texas, with more than 10,000 participating venues. The complaints worth knowing about are practical rather than signs of a scam: offers that didn't apply at checkout, confusion over temporary card holds, and slow email support.
Can you cash out inKind Cash Back?
No. Cash Back only works at inKind restaurants, and it can't be withdrawn, gifted or moved to another account. You can keep it from expiring without eating out: buying inKind Cash, claiming an inKind gift card or earning a referral bonus all reset the expiry date, the same way a visit does.
How does inKind compare with Upside?
Upside also pays you back for eating out, but you pay with your own linked card at the register and cash out through a bank transfer or gift card. inKind pays in credit for your next inKind meal, which expires if you don't return. If you want money back, Upside suits you better. If you eat out often at restaurants on inKind, its higher rates can outweigh that.
Is there an inKind referral code?
Yes. New members get $25 off a first meal of $50 or more, before tax and tip, by opening a member's invite link before creating an account. We keep a current code and the step-by-step at couponsuck.com/inkind-promo-code/.
Why do I see two charges after paying with inKind?
Usually it's a temporary authorization hold from your bank sitting beside the real payment, and it drops off within three to seven business days. The tip is also charged separately from the food, so one meal often shows as two lines. Open History in the app to see what actually went through.
Should you download inKind?
Open the restaurant map before anything else. If places you already go to take inKind, you'll get up to 20% of each bill back as inKind credit, plus $25 off your first $50 check. That credit only buys more inKind meals and lapses two months after your last visit, so it pays off for regulars and much less for anyone who eats out now and then.
