It was most definitely not something we would have chosen at the store, but that is what makes VMP so exciting.

The Verdict

A Fascinating Record, But Just OK

This month's Vinyl Me, Please pick was The Lemon of Pink by the Books, a record VMP itself framed as a mystery waiting to be discovered. We went in eager to explore it for ourselves.

It turned out to be the most interesting album we've received from VMP yet, a bizarre and strangely beautiful mix of noises that soothed us one moment and built up an almost-too-much energy the next. It was most definitely not something we would have chosen at the store, but that's exactly what makes VMP so exciting.

The pairing extras were just as unusual. November's cocktail, the Lemon of Pink + Margo Flips, blends single malt Scotch whiskey, chocolate stout, and a full egg, a combination we're genuinely excited to try. The included artwork, a psychedelic print, suited the record's mood, even if it's not one we'll be hanging on the wall.

In the end, we doubt we'll return to this record much, its strange energy made it hard to relax and enjoy dinner. Still, it's refreshing to hear this much variety from a single subscription, and we're looking forward to next month's pick.

Pros

  • Includes a themed cocktail recipe and custom artwork with every shipment
  • $10 referral discount available for new subscribers
Cons

Considerations

  • This month's pick, while interesting, wasn't one we're likely to replay
  • The energetic, unconventional sound made for an odd dinner-party soundtrack

Listening To November's Pick

The Lemon of Pink greeted us with a bizarre and strangely beautiful mix of noises, soothing in places, then building an energy that felt almost too much. It's not a record we would have picked off a shelf ourselves.

We haven't tried November's cocktail pairing yet, but the recipe, Single Malt Scotch whiskey, chocolate stout, and a full egg, sounds like a genuinely interesting combination worth mixing up.

The Artwork

This month's sleeve was a psychedelic print that matches the record's mood, not something we'll be framing, but others might.

We Recommend This To Readers Who:

  • Want to be surprised each month

VMP's picks skew unconventional, this one was 'most definitely not something we would have chosen at the store.'

  • Enjoy pairing music with a themed cocktail

Every shipment includes a custom drink recipe built around that month's record.

The Bottom Line Conclusion:

A Fascinating Record, But Just OK Overall

While The Lemon of Pink was a unique and fascinating listen, we doubt we'll return to it often, still, it's refreshing to hear this much variety, and we're looking forward to next month's Vinyl Me, Please pick.
