The Verdict

A Deliberately Simple Bed That Delivers on Softness

Doze took a different approach to mattress design: instead of stacking layer after layer, they stripped the bed down to just two, betting that simplicity paired with a soft top would be enough.

It rates a 5 out of 10 on firmness — very soft straight out of the box, though it firms up over the next couple of days as the premium gel memory foam settles in.

Beneath that soft top sits 7 inches of moderate-density foam that disperses weight gradually, which makes the Doze particularly well-suited to side sleepers whose hips and shoulders benefit from that gradual give. The trade-off is almost no horizontal motion transfer, but also little bounce.

A 3-inch sinkage at the center of the bed confirms it's a genuinely soft mattress — the gel foam conforms to the body rather than pushing back.

That gel foam also actively pulls heat out of the bed, addressing the usual downside of soft mattresses trapping warmth. The faint new-mattress smell we noticed on unboxing is common and cleared within a couple of hours of airing the room out.

At $750 for a queen, Doze keeps things simple and affordable, and we'd point it at side sleepers and any back sleeper who prefers a plush, sink-in feel.

Pros

Why We Love It

  • Genuinely soft, cloud-like feel from the premium gel memory foam top
  • Gradual weight dispersal is kind to hips and shoulders — a strong match for side sleepers
  • Gel foam actively pulls heat out, offsetting the usual downside of soft beds
  • Simple two-layer build keeps the price down at $750 for a queen
Cons

Considerations

  • Little bounce or responsiveness — not for sleepers who want a springy feel
  • Takes a couple of days to fully firm up after unboxing
  • Slight off-gassing smell on unboxing, common but present

Sleeping on the Doze

The Doze arrives very soft, softening further before it firms up over the following days as the premium gel memory foam settles in. We found almost no horizontal movement when testing, but also little bounce-back.

With 3 inches of sinkage at the center of the bed, this is a mattress that conforms to the body rather than pushing back against it — exactly what you'd expect from a 5/10 firmness rating.

The premium gel memory foam pulls heat down and out of the mattress, addressing the tendency of softer beds to trap warmth. We noticed a slight smell on unboxing, which cleared after leaving the doors open for a couple of hours.

Built for Side Sleepers

The moderate-density support layer allows gradual weight dispersal, so hips and shoulders aren't taking the brunt of a firmer bed.

We Recommend This To Readers Who:

  • Are a side sleeper

Gradual weight dispersal cushions hips and shoulders better than a firmer mattress would.

  • Are a back sleeper who likes it soft

The soft gel memory foam top suits back sleepers who prefer to sink in rather than stay propped up.

How Doze Keeps It Simple

1 TOP LAYER — 3" of premium gel memory foam for a soft, cloud-like feel
